MARKING OUR HISTORY
MEMBERSHIP

The chapter was organized in the Parish House of St. Stephen’s Church, West 69th Street in New York City (NYC).  The Rector, Reverend Charles Russell Treat, spouse of organizer Julia Treat, served as the chapter’s first chaplain.  In 1901, the chapter honored Reverend Treat by presenting a tablet to the church.

During our chapter's 128-year history, our members have placed several historical tablets throughout Manhattan to mark important locations, events, and people related to the Revolutionary War.

Our current project sees our chapter collaborating with a NYC public middle school to create narrative panels signifying the location of our nation's first presidential mansion, which has long since become a part of the Brooklyn Bridge, along with our 1899 plaque marking its location.

Stay tuned for more on this exciting NYC adventure.

WHO WE ARE

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR) is a non-profit, non-political, volunteer women’s service organization comprising 3,000 chapters and more than 190,000 members.

The Mary Washington Colonial Chapter NSDAR was organized on November 28, 1896, and our founders chose to honor a woman and a concept with our chapter's name.

Mary Ball Washington was the second wife of Augustine Washington, and George was her first child. She was deemed by the chapter founders to be the most sacred and noble character among women in the annals of American colonial and revolutionary history. Certainly, history has shown that she had a profound influence on the life of the first president of the United States.

Colonial was added to the name to acknowledge the debt that the American Revolution owed to the colonial years, when the foundation of the republic was laid and the principles of self-government fostered.

Our chapter meets in Manhattan with more than 110 members actively devoted to historic preservation, education, and patriotic endeavors.

We provide support to veterans and active duty military personnel, award JROTC and DAR Good Citizens Medals to NYC-area students, and support patriotic events such as the New York City Flag Day and the Veterans Day parades.
